Cinemax Renews 'Strike Back' For Second Season

Section 20 will return, but not everyone will make it out of the first season alive...
By Blair Marnell
October 06, 2011

Earlier this year, Cinemax and the British network Sky teamed up to co-produce "Strike Back;" which has quickly become one of the best action shows on television. And now "Strike Back" is set for another season next year.

Cinemax and Sky have officially announced that a new season of "Strike Back" will debut next year and run for 10 episodes. That will make it the second season of the rebooted series and the third season if you count the original incarnation of "Strike Back;" which starred Richard Armitage as John Porter.

The current incarnation of "Strike Back" features Sullivan Stapleton as Damien Scott, a former U.S. Special Forces operative who joins the secret British military unit known as Section 20. Suspecting a mole within Section 20 itself, Scott has formed an alliance with Michael Stonebridge (Philip Winchester) as they pursue the dangerous terrorist known as Latif (Jimi Mistry).

According to the season 2 announcement, some major character deaths are ahead in the remaining episodes of the current season. Therefore, none of the cast members have been confirmed to return in the second season. However, Tony Saint has signed on to write several episodes and co-produce the series, alongside returning producers Andy Harries, Huw Kennair-Jones and Michael Casey. Bill Eagles will also return to direct four of the new episodes while Paul Wilmshurst has agreed to direct two episodes.

The second season of "Strike Back" will begin filming in South Africa in early 2012, with the season premiere likely to land next summer on Cinemax and Sky. The final three episodes of the current season of "Strike Back" continue this Friday on Cinemax.

Cinemax Renews ‘Strike Back’ For Season 2

Cinemax’s first primetime drama series Strike Back is a keeper. HBO’s sibling cable network has picked up a 10-episode second season of the action series to air next year. Filming will begin in South Africa in early 2012. Returning as producing partners to Cinemax/HBO are Left Bank and Sky, which will air the series in the U.K. Also coming back are Left Bank’s Andy Harries and Sky’s Huw Kennair-Jones as executive producers, series producer Michael Casey, head of production Marigo Kehoe, series directors Bill Eagles, who will direct four new episodes, Paul Wilmshurst, who will direct two episodes, and writer Tony Saint, who will write a number of episodes and co-executive produce. There must be major deaths coming in the final episodes of Season 1 of Strike Back, which ends Oct. 21, as Cinemax declined to announce the cast for Season 2 “due to plot spoilers in upcoming episodes”. Season 1 starred Sullivan Stapleton and Philip Winchester, with Amanda Mealing, Eva Birthistle, Jimi Mistry, Rhashan Stone, Michelle Lukes and Richard Armitage. The current season of the show tells the story of a charismatic former U.S. Special Forces operative (Stapleton) who joins with a stealth British military unit when a resourceful international terrorist group plots a major attack.

Cinemax has given its first original scripted primetime series, Strike Back, another season, the network announced on Thursday.

The action series will return for a second season with 10 new episodes in 2012. Production will begin in South Africa early next year.

The network will continue co-producing the series with Left Bank and Sky. It will also preserve its lead creative team with executive producer Andy Harries, series producer Michael Casey and head of production Marigo Kehoe. Sky’s Huw Kennair-Jones will executive produce. Also returning to direct the series are Bill Eagles, Paul Wilmshurst, and Tony Saint, who will also write a number of episodes and co-executive produce.

The series follows two intelligence agents, British Sgt. Michael Stonebridge (Philip Winchester) and former U.S. Delta Force officer Damien Scott (Sullivan Stapleton) -- both members of an elite counter-terrorism team.

Season 1 is currently airing new episodes on Fridays at 10 p.m. with its season finale on Oct. 21.

As part of its original programming push, Cinemax is also developing a new series with True Blood executive producer Alan Ball, one based on the Transporter film franchise, and a drama project from feature writers Andre Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore.

Sky One Orders 3rd Season of Strike Back
October 10, 2011 By Staff

Sky One has ordered a third series of its hit action series Strike Back, based on the book by Chris Ryan.

The first series, starring Richard Armitage as a special forces solider carrying out ‘black ops’, aired last year to rave reviews. The second series, which stars Philip Winchester and Sullivan Stapleton, is currently airing.

The new ten-part series will begin filming in South Africa in early 2012 for transmission later in the year.

The third series will once again be a co-production between Sky and CINEMAX/HBO and will be produced by Left Bank Pictures.

The producers are withholding casting details to avoid spoilers for the current series which ends on October 23rd.

Anne Mensah, Sky’s Head of Drama, said: “Strike Back has proved to be an incredibly successful brand for Sky1 HD, and our collaboration with HBO/Cinemax made the scale and ambition of the second season even more exciting.

“The third season is shaping up to be even stronger. We want it to be the most high-octane, action packed drama on British Television.”
