‘A Walk in My Shoes’ Set to Air on Friday, December 3 at 8/7C on NBC
by Andyp on November 30, 2010

Procter & Gamble and Walmart will premiere their made-for-TV family movie, “A Walk in My Shoes,” starring Nancy Travis, Philip Winchester and Yara Martinez on Friday, Dec. 3, 2010 at 8/7C on NBC.

The movie is the third installment of their Family Movie Night Initiative, which was launched last April in direct response to research which revealed that parents across America are seeking more family-oriented entertainment to enjoy together. When P&G and Walmart learned that there was a clear desire for more options when it comes to quality family entertainment, they made a commitment to be part of the solution and are looking forward to bringing more family movies throughout 2011. Propeller has been working alongside Family Movie Night producers to connect “A Walk in My Shoes” and other films to the faith and family audience.
“A Walk in My Shoes” makes viewers stop and think, “What would I learn if I stepped into someone else’s life?” Stressed-out high school teacher Trish Fahey (Nancy Travis, “Three Men and a Baby,” “Becker”) can’t understand her students’ lack of effort in the classroom and why their parents don’t seem to care. This is especially true of Justin Kremer (Cameron Deane Stewart), a popular, skateboard-loving, basketball star who is underperforming in her class. Trish has him suspended from the basketball team and quickly chalks up the situation as a case of bad parenting.

This perspective dramatically changes when Trish meets Molly (Yara Martinez, “My Own Worst Enemy”), a mysterious stranger intent on helping her see things differently. After a car accident, Trish wakes to find herself living the life of Cindy Kremer, the woman she has rashly judged and criticized. Molly helps Trish discover that there is more to the story and learns a powerful lesson that affects everyone she interacts with, including her husband, daughter and the Marine next door. No one is left unchanged.
“A Walk in My Shoes” will take viewers on an inspirational journey, as they experience how families can come together in the face of adversity. The film’s main characters are forced to confront their pasts and learn valuable life lessons in an uplifting manner that families can enjoy together. This emotional story is an expansion into the dramatic genre for P&G and Walmart.

The first two films in the Family Movie Night Initiative, “Secrets of the Mountain” and “The Jensen Project,” were family adventures and proved to be a success with both parents and kids alike. More than 7.5 million viewers tuned in to watch “Secrets of the Mountain” and the DVD is the best selling made-for-TV movie ever sold at Walmart. The success continued with “The Jensen Project,” and as a result of both movies, the brands not only experienced increases in sales, but received hundreds of letters from parents with positive feedback asking for more programming that families can enjoy together.

“A Walk in My Shoes” will also feature a soundtrack produced by music mogul Randy Jackson. The “A Walk in My Shoes” DVD and soundtrack will be sold together in a bonus pack exclusively at Walmart starting Saturday, Dec. 4. For more information visit www.awalkinmyshoes.com.

NBC's "A Walk in My Shoes" is a journey worth taking
Friday December 3, 2010

A Walk in My Shoes, the third edition of the Walmart - P&G Family Movie Night franchise debuts tonight (Friday) at 8:00 PM (ET) on NBC and I'd recommend it for anyone tired of cynical television -- as trite cynicism has, unfortunately, become the medium's norm.

The quirky storyline follows Trish Fahey (Nancy Travis), a nice but annoyingly-together teacher/wife/mother who can't understand why the people in her life (including one particular student and her own daughter) aren't as "together" as she is.

But, then, this being a movie fantasy, she's about to get her perspective literally changed after a car accident thrusts her consciousness into the body (and life) of Cindy Kremer, the mother of Justin Kremer (Cameron Deane Stewart), a student who she's about to have bounced from the high school basketball team because he hasn't handed in an essay on time.  Trish had judged Justin as academically lazy and his mother Cindy as an enabler of that laziness. Oh, Trish!

While Trish is in the body of Cindy, we the audience, Quantum Leap-style, still view her as Nancy Travis and, again, like that classic series, Trish has a guide in her odyssey in the form of Molly (Yara Martinez), a mysterious angel (though that term is never actually used) whose role is to allow her discover things she never realized about those she was quick to judge. Of course, Trish will also learn about herself on this strange journey.

While in the body of Cindy Kremer, she will discover the emotional and financial challenges the Kremer family (and, particularly, Justin) are dealing with that she had absolutly no idea about. Meanwhile, Justin becomes friends with Trish's teen daughter -- giving the demanding mom a fresh perspective on the hopes and dreams of her own child.

And, while working at Cindy's waitress job, she'll serve her law officer husband and learn about some of the pressures he deals with on a daily basis -- which she was largely unaware of because, being so busy with her own concerns, she rarely listened.

Molly, meantime, is also recruiting Jake (Philip Winchester), a former marine with pain of his own to heal, in her overall plan to help everyone involved. Jake will learn one of the film's primary lessons -- that "When you help someone else...you heal your own wound."

Like the other two Family Movie Night films that have aired so far (Secrets of the Mountain and The Jensen Project), A Walk in My Shoes is a backdoor pilot with series potential. Should a series result, viewers will follow the mysterious Molly and Jake as they move about helping and healing others who in need of new perspectives -- suggesting a sort of co-ed Highway to Heaven (with the perspective-changing twist) for a new generation (with Martinez and Winchester filling out the Michael Landon and Victor French roles).

If the series features more of the strong, understated performances and honest, believable situations that are presented in tonight's film, NBC could have a winner on its hands as viewers are showing every indication of being ready to embrace shows with heart.

One suggestion for a series, I'd humbly make, is to feature stories where two opposing characters actually swap bodies (and perspectives) and view their conflicts from the other's point of view. Who knows? Molly and Jake could even help them get something positive done in Congress.  Or, is that too far-fetched?

“When I read the script for ‘A Walk in My Shoes’ I was instantly drawn to the character of Trish Fahey, because I think many of us have found ourselves in similar situations,” stated Nancy Travis. “It’s important to remember that today many families, especially those with members serving in the military, are balancing many pressures, so I was happy to work on a project that not only brought family-friendly programming to television, but addressed these life lessons.”

Yara Martinez, best known for her work in CBS’s “The Unit,” plays the role of Molly. a walk in my shoes movie

High school teacher Trish Fahey (Nancy Travis, “Three Men and a Baby,” “Becker”) is your typical mother of two, with a great house, a great husband and what seems to be,a fulfilling career. When Justin Kremer (Cameron Deane Stewart) doesn’t turn in his paper, an action that might suspend him from his basketball team, he is just as stubborn to simply not care. But everything changes when he meets a zany girl, Molly (Yara Martinez, “My Own Worst Enemy”), who transforms his perspective on life, forever.

“I don’t understand, where was God when my dad died?” “A Walk in My Shoes” will definitely make us wonder and stop for a second to reconsider if we are actually listening. It also reminds us that “maybe sometimes life just happens for a reason; life isn’t much a puzzle as it is a plan.”

“A Walk in My Shoes” premiers today at 8/7C on NBC.
Look for a review of the show here on Monday by me using my ‘Is it family friendly?’ spotlight.

Dove Worldview:
A real, authentic Family Movie Night on network television! What a concept! Thank you Wal-Mart and P&G!

This movie embodies the age-old axiom, "You never truly know someone until you've walked a mile in his shoes." Or, in the words of songwriter, Joe South, "...If you could see you through my eyes instead your own ego I believe you'd be surprised to see that you've been blind. Before you abuse, criticize and accuse, then walk a mile in my shoes." Trish Fahey is a hyper-charged over-achiever wife, mother, and teacher. She judges everyone by a very high standard. It takes a car accident and a stranger named Molly who appears in the seat right next to Trish to turn her life, and with it her view of others around her, upside down. As a result Trish gets a totally new perspective on the lives of her family and friends. Every viewer, no matter how old or young, can learn something by taking "A Walk in My Shoes.” We are delighted to award this family friendly drama the Dove "Family-Approved Seal" for all ages.
