Strike Back Episode 5 Preview: Section 20 Takes on Iain Glen & Adewale (Video)
By Bags H. : September 16, 2011

The hunt for Latif (Jimi Mistry) continues on Strike Back. After last week’s shocking end, which ended with one surprising death and one surprising kill, Section 20 has to find new information on Latif’s whereabouts.

In Episode 5, Iain Glen (Game of Thrones, Lara Croft Tomb Raider) and Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje guest-star as two new villains who will face-off against Stonebridge (Philip Winchester) and Scott (Sullivan Stapleton).

Check out this new clip (plus 2 more clips following our still gallery) below showing Adewale in action. As you can see the intensity has kicked up several notches in this firefight.

In Strike Back Episode 5:
Section 20′s next move is to track Latif¹s (Jimi Mistry) weapons supplier, which leads them to Gerald Crawford
(Iain Glen), a former British Royal Marine turned arms dealer. Once they snatch him, he agrees to help them only if they rescue his daughter Clare (Laura Haddock), an aid worker in the Sudan who is being held for ransom by
a brutal militia leader Tahir (Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje). The team reluctantly works with a questionable government official as a middleman to set up the exchange. When Scott is recognized by a war zone reporter and old flame Maggie (Rachel Shelley), he discovers that the story she was investigating may be intertwined with the arms deal. At the exchange point, Tahir has a different idea of doing the deal “in good faith.”

We’ve got a few new stills from Ep 5 below. Check them out and get ready for an all-new episode of Strike Back tonight at 10PM ET/PT on Cinemax.

Exclusive 'Strike Back' Episode 5 Preview

Stonebridge and Scott are outgunned and outmaneuvered in advance scenes from the next episode of Cinemax's action series.
By Blair Marnell
September 15, 2011
1

Last week, Section 20's top operatives, Michael Stonebridge (Philip Winchester) and Damien Scott (Sullivan Stapleton) caught up with former IRA terrorist, Daniel Connolly (Liam Cunningham) and they prevented him from escaping with a hidden WMD. However, Connolly had captured their colleague (and Stonebridge's not-so-secret lover) Captain Kate Marshall (Eva Birthistle) and he had strapped her to a bomb that was beyond their ability to defuse.

Connolly offered to remotely defuse the bomb if Stonebridge let him go, but he immediately reneged on his promise and let Kate die in a violent explosion. Although Scott, Stonebridge and Section 20's leader, Col. Eleanor Grant (Amanda Mealing) ultimately caught up to Connolly and took their revenge, the damage was done. And the vicious terrorist, Latif (Jimi Mistry) was still free to pursue his goal of using WMDs against Western countries.

In our exclusive preview scene (courtesy of Cinemax), Stonebridge and Scott attempt track down Latif's weapons supplier, Gerald Crawford (Iain Glen); who proves to be a more formidable foe than they would have expected.

Former "Lost" star Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje makes his "Strike Back" debut in our second preview clip of the week as Tahir, a brutal militia leader who warns his latest hostages that they shouldn't "antagonize" his men.

Meanwhile, our third clip follows Section 20 as they attempt to decide how to deal with Crawford and if they should attempt to extract Crawford's daughter, Clare (Laura Haddock) from Tahir's custody.

Finally, Scott and Stonebridge find themselves badly outgunned by Tahir's men in the last clip of the week. And it looks like this may be one fight that they can't win with firepower alone...

Don't miss the fifth episode of "Strike Back" this Friday night on Cinemax!

Strike Back Episode 5 Review: More Bloodshed for Scott and Stonebridge
By Bags H. : September 18, 2011

There’s one thing you can say about Strike Back, the series isn’t afraid to take risks – especially, when Scott (Sullivan Stapleton) is involved. He may get all the women, but Scott also catches all the physical flack. Stonebridge (Philip Winchester), by contrast, does not get shot or captured as much as Scott, but he’s had to suffer through emotional loss after Kate (Eva Birthistle) was very unceremoniously blown up at the end of the South African mission.

Strike Back

I’ve said it before, Strike Back plays out like a Jason Bourne or Bond movie. Suffering and death is ingrained in the series and you don’t have to wait twenty episodes like network TV for it to happen.

In Episode 5, Iain Glen (Game of Thrones, Lara Croft Tomb Raider) and Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje (Lost, The Thing) guest star as new enemies to Section 20. Glen plays a typical action-movie archetype. He is Crawford, ex-military turned arms dealer who has information on Latif (Jimi Mistry). Agbaje is Tahir, a military leader in the Sudan looking for weapons. Okay, it seems like the typical story setup. Bad guy needs other bad guy to get weapons and become an even “badder” guy. Perhaps, one will betray the other.

However, Episode 5 took a slightly different direction. Tahir kidnaps Crawford’s daughter in order to get access to weapons from Crawford. Now, Section 20 has to help Crawford get his daughter back, Clare (Laura Haddock), in exchange for information on Latif.

It was great seeing Stonebridge chase down Crawford. After Kate’s death, he’s become more of a rogue. He goes off after Crawford alone only to get hit over the head.

“You see what happens when you go off without me.” – Scott to Stonebridge
“F’n keep up!” – Stonebridge

When Scott eventually captures Crawford he makes his captive suck on the barrel of his gun. Not very nice.

Strike Back

In Kenya, Stonebridge, Maj. Oliver Sinclair (Rhashan Stone) and Scott go undercover as Crawford’s men. Unfortunately, a woman journalist shows up potentially exposing their cover. Really, it’s only unfortunate for Stonebridge because he has to go it alone with Sinclair, a non-field agent. It turns out she’s one of Scott’s ex-lovers (who isn’t). Thankfully, she turns up information on Crawford’s real team that is also in Kenya. The two set off on a high-speed car chase (relatively high-speed since their on dirt roads) after spotting Crawford’s men.

“If we lose him. I’m never gonna sleep with you again. Ever!” – Scott

You have to love the dialogue thrown in here.

Soon after, viewers got an excellent car crash scene, when Scott rams another car with a taxi. You usually don’t get crash scenes that massive and well done on TV.

I’m really starting to like all of the Section 20 members when they leave the confines of Section 20’s war room. In the last episode we saw Col. Eleanor Grant (Amanda Mealing ) shoot Daniel Connolly (Liam Cunningham, Game of Thrones). In this episode, Sinclair gets to show off his dry humor.

When Stonebridge and Sinclair make it to the exchange point to meet Tahir, Stonebridge tells Sinclair to use Crawford’s daughter as a human shield. Not only does this show how much of a rogue Sinclair is becoming, but it also gave Sinclair a chance to drop a witty line.

“Doesn’t sound very chivalrous. I like it. Yeah.” – Sinclair

The showrunners are doing a terrific job of scripting ruthless villains. When Crawford brings money to the exchange instead of weapons, Tahir cuts off Clare’s ear. Tahir throws the ear at Crawford saying that is what his money has bought. Crawford still has an ace up his sleeve that he uses in a pit of fury. He orders his snipers to begin shooting. Sadly, he didn’t get Clare back yet. So while most of Tahir’s men are shot down, Tahir escapes with Clare. It’s really Clare’s fault. She had a chance to run, but froze.

In the attack, Scott took a bullet to the side. Now, Stonebridge has to go hunt down Tahir without the aid of his right-hand rogue.

We’ve hit the halfway point in Strike Back’s freshman season. Two questions are lingering. Who is the mole inside Section 20? And, who else will die before the end of the season? You know someone will. It’s Strike Back after all. This is a war. People die.

Strike Back Episode 5 - Recap and Review: The Return of Mr. Eko
Thompson on Hollywood
Wet work in the Sudan, writes David Chute, requires both a stubborn streak and a thick skull.

One odd aspect of Strike Back’s storytelling about elite special forces commandos is that noticeably often it’s hinged upon one or both of the two main characters screwing up, often at the cost of a life or two. Episode 5, for example, gets off to a impressively fast, bloody, compressed start, goosed along by some clever quick cutting and an interpolated mini-flashback—but then in quick succession both of Section 20’s frontline covert operatives, Michael Stonebridge (Philip Winchester) and Damien Scott (Sullivan Stapleton), are dry-gulched and clobbered during a cat-and-mouse shooting match at a container port.

The operatives do succeed in nabbing their immediate target, an arms dealer named Crawford (Iain Glenn, Game of Thrones’s Jorah Mormont), another known associate of the season’s ultimate target, super-terrorist Latif (Jimmy Mistry). But there turn out to be a few things these elite intelligence gatherers don’t yet know about him: For starters that he has a daughter, Clare (Laura Haddock), who is working working under an assumed name as an aid worker in the Sudan and has recently been kidnapped by charismatic and cold-blooded militia leader, Tahir, played with rumbling menace by Lost’s Mr. Eko, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. Section 20 is startled to learn that the shipment of lethal weapons they’ve been looking at is intrnded Crawford as a ransom payment. Which makes it a “humanitarian” project, according to him; bad means harnessed to a good end. The kind of neat idea Oliver North might endorse.

“How did we miss this?” wonders an annoyed Eleanor Grant (Amanda Mealing), Section 20’s soulful Commanding Officer, when the family connection is revealed, a connection that will turn out to be central to the way the episode develops. Clare has been walking into combat zones for years so it’s not really a surprise that she has enough sang froid to appreciate the irony of the situation: Everything she’s done with her life up to that point has been intended to repudiate her father’s activities; now his abhorrent blood money may be her only hope. The supposedly utterly ruthless Crawford, in turn, is wracked with guilt: he fears he may have set the kidnap plot in motion when he went through back-door channels to get his daughter’s visa revoked, so that she’d be expelled from the country for her own safety—but in so doing he revealed her identity to the corrupt officials he was working with, who trotted right over to Tahir’s encampment to arrange the kidnapping.

Rather than simply “Go Guantanamo on his ass,” as Scott impishly suggests, Section 20 makes a deal with Crawford: they will charge in to secure Clare’s release in exchange for Latif’s whereabouts. A spell of sexy comic relief (and a couple of key clues) are donated by Scott’s latest fling, a resourcefully high-strung American “journo” (as the Brits say) played by Rachel Shelley, who is unlikely to be a familiar face for action fans, since her most memorable vehicles to date have been the The L Word and the Oscar-nominated Bollywood epic Lagaan. Not that it will be her face they’re studying.

A series that is as well created as “Strike Back” but that nevertheless spends a fair amount of time spelling out all the awful things that can go wrong is pretty clearly doing this for a reason. Perhaps the agenda behind a lot of the messy foul-ups that decorate Strike Back is to demonstrate how unpredictable and even chaotic striking back often is. The fighters who win through in the end put their mistakes behind them and re-think the entire plan on the run. In this world, a gift for improvisation could be the one truly indispensible survival skill.

ALSO: I’ve been meaning to say an appreciative a word or two about Strike Back’s” surprisingly soulful and effective theme song. Turns out to be “Short Change Hero,” by British band The Heavy, which also had a tune in the season finale of “True Blood.”

Here’s the cool Strike Back title sequence followed by a well-recorded live performance.

STRIKE BACK 1:05 'Episode 5'

Scott and Stonebridge team up with an arms dealer to save the man's daughter from a dangerous warlord.
By Blair Marnell

Episode Title: "Episode 5"

Writer: Richard Zajdlic

Director: Alex Holmes

Previously on "Strike Back"

Damien Scott (Sullivan Stapleton) survived the bomb pined to him by former IRA terrorist, Daniel Connolly (Liam Cunningham) who admitted that the blast had been rigged not to harm him as a test. With his cover as a hacker intact, Scott learned that Connolly and his team intended to steal a long hidden WMD to deliver it to their primary target, Latif (Jimi Mistry). Back at the base, Michael Stonebridge (Philip Winchester) argued with his on-again, off-again lover, Captain Kate Marshall (Eva Birthistle) about who should bring in Connolly's contact at ATAT, the weapons company holding the WMD. Kate kept the assignment, but Stonebridge slipped a tracking device on her.

But when Kate went to meet her contact, Connolly grabbed both of them off the street. Scott and Stonebridge managed to stop Connolly from getting away with the stolen WMD, but he left Kate strapped to a bomb beyond their ability to defuse. Connolly offered to deactivate the bomb if Stonebridge let him go, but Connolly quickly reneged and Kate was killed in a violent explosion. Later, Stonebridge, Scott and Section 20 leader, Col. Eleanor Grant (Amanda Mealing) hunted down Connolly and took their revenge. But it couldn't bring back their fallen comrade and Latif was still free and planning an attack on western countries.

Story:

In Darfur, Dr. Clare Somersby (Laura Haddock) and her fiancee, Dr. Bakri Hassan (Obi Abili) are working at a U.N. primary care clinic and against his wishes, Clare insists upon staying to save a young boy's mother who was found stabbed and raped. They stabilize the woman but they miss their military escort back to the U.N. compound. That night, a gang of marauders invade the clinic and slaughter most of the people there including the young boy's mother. When Bakri is shot in the leg, Clare stays with him as the marauder leader, Tahir ( Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje) approaches her. In Kenya, Stonebridge tries to blow off steam in the gym while Kate's death weighs heavily on his mind. Section 20 is then given their new target: Latif's weapons supplier, Gerald Crawford (Iain Glen).

At Crawford's planned delivery of weapons, he realizes that it's a trap and he gets the drop on Stonebridge. Crawford nearly gets away, but Stonebridge and Scott prevent him from escaping with his bodyguard. Back at the base, Grant offers Crawford a reduced sentence if he helps give them Latif. Instead he tells them that his daughter Clare has been taken and he is bring forced to deliver weapons for her safe return. Back in Darfur, Clare objects when some of Tahir's men attempt to make the children beat an injured man. When she resists, the guard rips open her shirt, but Tahir intercedes before it can go further.

Tahir explains why Clare is being used as leverage against her father. He then tells her that he only needs one doctor as a hostage and he kills Bakri in front of her. Arriving in Sudan at an upscale hotel in Khartoum, Scott, Stonebridge and Major Oliver Sinclair (Rhashan Stone) pose as Crawford's employees while he meets with, Matak Achmed (Fraser James) an intermediary between himself and Tahir. Scott is immediately pulled away by Maggie (Rachel Shelley), a war zone reporter and former lover who spots him in the lobby and realizes that there's a story brewing nearby.

Privately, Maggie tells Scott that she photographed other private military contractors in the area. Although Maggie tries to use her info for leverage, Scott simply takes her sim card and uploads it to Section 20. But because Maggie has her own cab driver, Jacoub (Abdul Salis); Scott allows her to tag along as he drives off. Using their facial recognition technology, Section 20 identifies the men as South African mercenaries working for Crawford. When he spots the men at a local market, Scott takes over Jacoub's cab and totals it to crash into the other car and disable Crawford's men.

Back at the hotel, Oliver and Stonebridge realize that they are also being targeted by two of Crawford's men and they dispatch them. At Jacoub's home, he leaves briefly to deliver a chicken and Maggie and Scott take the opportunity to get reacquainted... in bed. Meanwhile, Crawford explains to Stonebride and Oliver that he inadvertently gave Matak leverage against him by asking him to revoke his daughter's visa. Instead, Matak told Tahir where he could find her and they both used her as a bargaining chip. Because he couldn't trust them to free his daughter, he hired a team of mercs to help him save Clare... who attacked Section 20 without his knowledge. Oliver also suspects that Crawford is holding back on the number of men still active from his team.

Scott is late for the exchange for Clare as he is forced to ride with Maggie and Jacoub in a borrowed car. The remaining members of Crawford's team also take sniper positions as Oliver and Stonebridge await Tahir's arrival. Crawford offers Tahir a great deal of cash as collateral for the weapons, but Tahir cuts off Clare's ear and tells him that is all his money has purchased. Angered, Crawford tells his team to kill them all and a fierce firefight breaks out. Scott is able to take out some of Crawford's men, but he is shot and badly wounded. Tahir escapes with Clare and just before Stonebridge and the team are about to be murdered, Jacoub runs down the last shooter.

With Scott in serious condition and bleeding badly, Oliver accompanies him and Maggie in the car for medical help while the unlikely team of Crawford, Stonebridge and Jacoub (!) get ready to pursue Tahir across the desert.

Breakdown:

Last week's episode of "Strike Back" cemented its status as the best action series on TV and it continued to live up to that reputation this week.

Part of the appeal of this series is that the producers don't shy away from the consequences of violence. There are definitely some over-the-top moments, but usually when people are shot on this show... they die. It's a more honest approach to action and it's hard to picture any program other than "Breaking Bad" that would graphically feature a woman getting her ear cut off. It's not the gore that I find appealing, but it was a genuine shock moment that seems all too infrequent on television.

Scott's wound at the end of the episode was also impressive both in the way that it was depicted and that the producers resisted the urge to have him pull the "action hero no-sell" and instantly get back up and start shooting. I can buy Stonebridge and Crawford's team up at the end, but Jacoub's presence is kind of hilarious. Still, the moment when Jacoub ran down the last shooter was an undeniably crowd pleasing moment. "Strike Back" seems to have a knack for giving the fans what they want to see.

Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje made a formidable appearance as Tahir and his brutality towards his prisoners was chillingly believable. If anything, "Strike Back" probably held back some of the horror of Darfur. But it was Iain Glen who gave the most layered performance of the week as Crawford. Like Tahir, Crawford seems to have an amoral attitude towards his dealings with Latif and his betrayal of Section 20. However, when his daughter is threatened, it's clear that Clare is the only thing that matters to him. And it's his love for her that gives Crawford some needed dimension.

Kate's death in last week's episode does seem to have made Stonebridge much angrier and more willing to risk himself to save a woman he doesn't know. Even with the carrot of catching Latif dangled in front of him, it's obvious that Stonebridge sees this mission as his chance to redeem himself in his own eyes for what happened to Kate. As for Scott, he's as charmingly shallow as always. At this point, it's not a surprise if Scott is going to sleep with every woman he encounters on the show. Instead, the surprise comes if he doesn't sleep with them.

Even Rachel Shelley's Maggie falls into bed with Scott after sarcastically answering his threat not to have sex again with the amusing line "like I miss those three seconds!" Jacoub's "a thousand apologies, they are Americans!" as Scott hijacked a car was also a pretty funny line.

Half way through the season, "Strike Back" doesn't feel like it's made significant strides towards moving the overall story forward or telling us what "Project Dawn" is supposed to be. But thus far, the episodes have been so solid that I don't mind the lack of progression. They work as episodic adventures and the series has had some great hooks for the next episode. Tahir's getaway with Clare was a little cheesy, but I'd be lying if I said that I'm not looking forward to seeing Stonebridge and Crawford catch up with him. And I guess Jacoub too, I just hope he doesn't end up the butt of a joke out in the desert.

Crave Online Rating: 8 out of 10.

'Strike Back' Recap: "Episode 5"
By: Ian Wissman

The one that got away from Damien Scott.
Scott looks on at the one who got away.

Strike Back Recap: Season 1, Episode 5 (09/16/2011)
More Strike Back: Recaps | News | All TV Recaps | TVOlogy

There are several things I’ve come to expect--if not demand--when I sit down for an episode of Cinemax's action-thriller Strike Back. They are boobs, boning, guns, blood, and womanizing from the American (who's played by an Australian). And the producers of the show have been consistent on this; well, I think “Episode 2” may have been missing some boobage, but there was most certainly a bone-sesh.

If you’ve been riding along since the start, you know that we’re hanging out with super-secret intelligence agency Section 20 on their search for the WMD-monomaniac Latif. This episode's opening gambit is set in Darfur where a raiding party catches a young blonde medic after she sacrifices her ride to safety by hanging back and treating a stabbed mother. To add injury to insult, the raiders make sure to blast the saved mother first while they trash the joint and catch the girl. After the credit roll, we come to find out she’s not just anyone; she’s the daughter of a former Royal Marine-cum-arms dealer Garald Crawford who has known ties to Section 20 nemesis Latif.

Enter Damien Scott and Michael Stonebridge—who, by my figuring, probably should have been canned, oh, about 70 times for things like killing several operative targets that had been deemed “capture-not-kill,” or when he let international terrorist super-star Connelly run free (okay, they did catch him again later in the episode, but come on, talk about wasted resources…) because he was porking the woman Connelly promised to save. The crew hits Sudan to carry out a complicated hand-off of money and weapons between Crawford and the Sudanese raiders who have his daughter. Crawford strikes a deal with Section 20 to give up Latif if they help him get back his daughter. They oblige.

Upon arriving in Sudan, guess who magically acquaints with a beautiful woman. Yup, Damien Scott runs into an old photojournalist friend who he rides around Darfur with. I know what you’re wondering. Don’t worry, you don’t have to wait too long before she’s topless, and they’re bumping uglies. I think that brings his babe scorecard to four in the five episodes. This guy is almost as good as MacGyver. Almost.

Anyway, Stonebridge and co. escort Crawford to the meet-up point while Scott and his flavor-of-the-episode make their way to snipe/snap photos of the hand-off. Everyone meets in the middle and a flawless exchange occurs.

Oh wait, no, the good guys bargain to give half of the deal now, and the other half after Crawford’s spawn is safe. The leader of the kidnappers slices off the blonde’s ear ala Reservoir Dogs sans “Stuck in the Middle with You,” ie. sans any comic irony. Rounds are fired off all around; incoherent violence is wreaked while all the important people are spared. There’s a pretty sweet bullet-through-the-head shot when Scott takes aim at a sniper. And when the smoke clears, the raiders have gotten away with the girl. Stonebridge heads on with Crawford to get her back. Meanwhile, Scott’s badly hurt with a bullet in the gut. He’ll pull through though, I mean, dude survived that explosion in “Episode 3.”

I guess next week we’ll rejoin the party on their way to save Crawford’s daughter, and hope for a speedy, sex-filled recovery for Scott. Because if he doesn’t get laid next episode at least once, I might have to turn off my TV.

SumOlogy: Honestly, this episode was a little slower than the previous ones. It took forever for the deal to go down, and the resulting gunfight was incoherent and predictable. Hopefully next week’s speeds up the pace a bit.

Grade: 6/10

If you haven't been watching the Cinemax's new show, "Strike Back," then you've been missing out on a ton of secret-operative action. If you're a fan of "24," then think of "Strike Back" as its more violent, sexier cousin.

In case you haven't been following all of the action, here's a short recap of the premise.

The series follows Section 20, an elite military black ops unit within the British government that focuses on high-risk, top-priority targets--including an international group of terrorists.

And this week Section 20 is after a brutal militia leader named Tahir, played by Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje -- who "Lost" fans may know as Mr. Eko -- and he plays the twisted villan quite perfectly.

In tonight's episode, Section 20's effort to track Latif’s (Jimi Mistry) weapons supplier, which leads them to Gerald Crawford (Iain Glen), a former British Royal Marine turned arms dealer, who agrees to help them only if they rescue his daughter Clare (Laura Haddock), an aid worker in the Sudan who is being held for ransom by a brutal militia leader Tahir (Adewale).

The team reluctantly works with a questionable government official as a middleman to set up the exchange, but at the exchange point, Tahir has a different idea of doing the deal -- "in good faith."

Watch the exclusive clip of tonight's episode below. Catch all of the Adewale action tonight (Sept. 16) at 10 p.m. EST on Cinemax.
